March 2013 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on March 4.

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mrs. McMillan, Director of Special Education, introduced Mrs. Gotschall, Waverly Middle School Special Education teacher. She was joined by three WMS students who presented information regarding the "Circle of Friends" at WMS. These students explained how they partner and support students with special needs to help them be successful in school and in social situations. The students described how it has broadened their understanding of their peers, and it has impacted the school environment in a positive  way. Parents of an elementary student also shared how "Circle of Friends" has positively effected their child. This presentation is another example of how students in all school buildings are demonstrating leadership; qualities that cannot be measured on standardized testing.

The superintendent reported on the state legislative session, as well as topics encountered at an recently attended educational conference.

Committee report was received from Building/Grounds/Transportation. Building visits by architectural firm DLR are occuring as part of the process to update the district facility plan, including examining school safety and security.
