The October District 145 - Waverly Public Schools Update includes information about:

Although it is only October, a lot has already occurred this school year! Parent-Teacher Conferences were held at elementary schools in September. Middle School and High School conferences will occur in October. Grandparents Day at Hamlow Elementary and Eagle Elementary will occur in October, and the annual Fourth Grade Heritage Festival at Eagle Elementary was held on October 4. Homecoming activities occurred during the last week in September were filled with fun activities and Viking spirit was on display at all schools in the district.

Waverly Intermediate School has highlighted their activities to promote community and a focus on character education through a website loaded with photos and information. Click here to view.

Student Enrollment is officially counted on the last Friday in September. The total number of students in the district continues to grow. The number of students enrolled at each building was about the same as last year except for Waverly Intermediate School, which grew by nearly 30 students - mostly due to a larger third grade class. Two meetings have been held as the district continues a process to identify Facility Priorities. All materials and discussion of the advisory committee is available on our website. Click here to view facility meeting details.

Waverly High School students will participate in the annual Prepare for your Future Day in October. These events and activities are a collaborative effort by students and staff and is another way to make the connection between WHS students the relevance of education. 

October 7, 2013 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on October 7 at Eagle Elementary.

A public hearing was convened relating to the 2013-2014 proposed tax request. No persons addressed the Board regarding the proposed tax request.

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mr. Scott Blum, Director of Learning, presented information regarding the Nebraska State of the Schools Report, school improvement activities and shared a draft of the district's annual report.

The superintendent reported on student enrollment and a regulation change by the Nebraska Department of Education that will result in a revenue reduction estimated at $120,000 this fiscal year.

Committee reports: Building/Grounds/Transportation - reported on the progress of maintenance projects; Performance and Assessment - school improvement. Board members reported on training sessions they attended.

The Board took action to:

1. Approve the second reading of Policy 5002 Admission, Physical Examination, Immunization and Visual Evaluation, 5008 Option Enrollment Program, 5029 Archives and Memorbilia, and 6030 Restraint and Seclusion of Students.

2. Approve membership in the legislature advocacy group STANCE - Schools Taking Action for Nebraska Children's Education. School superintendents in this group have been talking with state senators regarding policy decision making and funding for education.

3. Approve participation in the Nebraska Whole Child Project Consortium.

4. Approve mid-term graduation requests for Waverly High School students.

5. Accepted a donation from the Alvo/Eagle Elementary Alumni used to purchase tables at Eagle Elementary.

6. Approve the 2013-14 tax request. The following chart displays the total tax levy for 2013-14 (highlighted) in comparison to previous years.

The Board discussed an "E-meeting" program to use technology to conduct Board business. Also discussion occurred regarding Board policy regarding advertising and promotion (1110), and conducting a Board self assessment.

Before adjourning the meeting, the Board discussed upcoming activities and committee meetings. The next regular meeting will be November 7 at the district office in Waverly.
