District News Update November 5, 2013

Many great learning experiences are occurring in District 145 - Waverly Public Schools. This month's update includes the Annual Report, an update on the Facility Advisory Committee, a summary of the November Board of Education meeting, plus highlights of a few of the comprehensive educational opportunities in our district.

Students at Waverly Intermediate School collected 2,877 pounds of clothing and linens that were donated to the People's City Mission. Click here for full story and photos!

Students Council members at Waverly Middle School, Eagle and W.I.S attended a leadership conference at Doane College - click for details.

On Wednesday, October 30th, District 145 fifth grade students participated in a Kindness Retreat presented by Youth Frontiers, Inc.  We would like to thank the District 145 Foundation for Education for funding this opportunity for our students.  Without their generous donation this would not be possible. Click for photos and details. Seventh and ninth grade retreats were held during the last week of October.

On Saturday, October 19th, 45 Eagle students participated in the Lincoln Pumpkin Run. Eagle students will be receiving an award for having over 10% of the students from Eagle participating in the run. Click here to view photos from the event.

On November 11, our nation says "thank you" to the men and women who are, or who have, served our country as members of the military. Eagle Elementary and Waverly Middle School will once again host an event for students, staff, and the public.

The facility planning process includes a community advisory committee to the Board of Education meeting at every school to learn more about current and future facility needs. The last scheduled meeting on November 25 is expected to provide recommendations for consideration of future planning. Materials from each meeting have been updated and posted on our website.

Many other student accomplishments are being recognized in District 145, such as students attending the FFA national convention, and WHS students being selected for all-state music.

The Board of Education met on November 4 at the district office.

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Waverly High School teachers presented information regarding student leadership and learning opportunities that are occurring for all high school students.

The superintendent reported on school improvement action plans, Youth Frontiers Retreats held for students in grades 5, 7, 9 (courtesy of the Foundation for Education), and insurance premium rates for the Educator's Health Alliance for 2014-15.

Committee reports: Building/Grounds/Transportation - reported on the progress of maintenance projects; Performance and Assessment - curriculum materials selection; Planning and Development - personnel contract negotiations.

The Board took action to:

1. Approve the option enrollment capacity for 2014-15.

2. Approve the annual report. The Annual Report is submitted to the patrons of School District #145 in accord with accreditation rules of the Nebraska Department of Education. This report is to give the district patrons information on student achievement, school system performance, and district resource allocation and expenditures. Click here to view the report.

3. Recognize the Waverly Education Association as the bargaining agent for teachers.
