District Update 1-22-10

by Bill Heimann

January 21, 2010

District Update #11 includes:

“Snow Days” to be made up

  1. High School Gym Floor Update
  2. 2010-11 Calendar Process
  3. Registration for 2010-11

Snow Days:

We have missed six student instructional days due to inclement weather. District 145 has no snow days built into the 2009-10 calendar. Students were originally scheduled to be dismissed on Wednesday, May 19. We are going to add four days to the student calendar (May 20-21; 24-25). The last day for students will be on Tuesday, May 25 – 12:45pm dismissal. By making up four days with students, we will recover some of the valuable instructional time that was lost. Teachers will make up all six days of their contract. May 26-27 will be used as school improvement days to examine student data. May 28 will be a teacher work day to complete necessary end of the year tasks, such as inventory.

IF more than six (6) total snow days occur, we will plan to make-up days with students, depending on when the next cancellation occurs. If there is a school cancellation, it is likely that we would make-up that student day on February 19, or March 4 or 11 or April 5. That depends on the timing of the future cancellations, and how many days are missed. If we miss several more days of school, it is possible that we may also need to lengthen the student day. If the option to lengthen the school day was used, we would need to add 30 minutes to the instructional day for thirteen days to make up for one school cancellation day.

We decided to schedule the make-up days in May, rather than scheduled days off in February or March. It is always a possibility that additional storms could occur in February or March (remember the blizzard a few years ago during the girls state basketball tournament?). Careful consideration has been given to this plan to make up snow days…if you would like to have additional information regarding the decision making process, please contact me.

The investigation for the source of the water leak at the High School East Gym continues. Pressure tests on water supply lines have not successfully determined the source of the leak. Almost all water lines are overhead, meaning that if there was a leak internally, most potential sources of the leak should show visible signs of water damage – but it has not. Initial water supply line pressure tests were conducted in the gym and areas adjacent to the gym. More tests are being conducted in areas that are farther removed from the gym – the process continues. In the meantime, plans are being made for floor replacement.

On January 21st, I met with teacher representatives from each building to receive feedback regarding the school calendar for 2010-11. The feedback was helpful as I prepare the calendar for next year. Some adjustments to the first draft will be made. The Board of Education will review the calendar in February, with final approval to occur in March.

Student Registration process for next year has begun including Kindergarten round-up. Parents considering option enrollment, applications are due March 15, 2010.
