District Update 4-22-10

District Update includes:

  1. April 21st Special Board of Education Meeting Summary
  2. May 3rd Board of Education Meeting

This is a summary of district events from the perspective of the superintendent.

The Board of Education met on Wednesday, April 21st The meeting was convened at 

7:02pm. The Board took action to accept the resignations of two teachers, Tony Tvrdy – Agriculture Education at the High School and April Roth – 3rd grade teacher at WIS. The Board expressed its appreciation to these teachers for their service to the district. Since changes in financial circumstances have occurred necessitating a reduction in force, the Board took action regarding the amendment of extended contract days at the end of the 2009-2010 school year; specifically:

  1. High School Guidance Services Program reducing the extended contract days from thirty (30) days to twenty-five (25) days for Jason Boitnott and Kelly Verkamp;
  2. Middle School Guidance Services Program reducing the extended contract days from ten (10) days to eight (8) days for Ruth Schmidt;
  3. Library Media Program reducing the extended contract days from ten (10) days to five (5) days for Kelly Bielenberg, Ann Vrana, and Gaye McCallum,
  4. Assessment Coordinator Program eliminating the extended contract days for Cindy Boss, Evi Wusk, Michael Cobelens, Teresa Hruska, and Annetta Davidson.

It was stated that these actions were for financial reasons, and not performance related. It was also stated that all teachers that wanted to be teaching in District 145 in 2010-11 will still have a teaching position. The meeting adjourned at 7:18pm.

Included on the agenda for the May 3 Board meeting:

  1. The district administrative team recognizes the challenging financial situation of the district and the Board will consider taking action to freeze administrator salaries for 2010-11.
  2. Teaching re-assignments that will be necessary for 2010-11 will be considered for approval. There are three teaching positions at the elementary level that will be filled through reassignment of teachers.
    1. Kindergarten enrollment next fall at Hamlow elementary is anticipated to be 100 students. I am recommending adding a fifth section of kindergarten to keep smaller classroom numbers. The trade-off will be one less section of fourth grade at Waverly Intermediate School next year. This year there are five sections of third grade for 100 students, next year that grade level would have four teachers instead of five.
    2. Eagle elementary has 2nd grade and 5th grade teaching positions that need to be filled due to retirement.
  3. Consider approval of a teaching contract for Industrial Technology at the High School.
  4. A report of the testing results from the water investigation at the high school will be provided.
