District Update 7-12-10

by Bill Heimann

July 12, 2010

It will soon be time to start thinking about the 2010-11 school year. Preparations have begun in School District 145.

At the July Board of Education meeting, the 2010-11 breakfast/hot lunch prices were approved as follows:

2009-10 Prices                                                                 2010-11 Prices

Breakfast                      Lunch                                       Breakfast          Lunch

K-5   $1.25                   $2.00                                       $1.30               $2.05

6-12  $1.40                   $2.15                                       $1.45               $2.25

Adult $2.00                   $2.80                                       $2.05               $2.90

If an elementary student eats lunch every day (175 school days), the total cost increase is $8.75 per year for that student. Our food service program is self sufficient and does not receive support from local tax dollars.

The Board of Education has authorized the continuance of cross-town busing as an option for students. This program serves students living North of Highway 6 and East of 148th Street in Waverly. The district is not required to provide this service, but has chosen to do so to ensure safe transportation for students across high traffic areas.

The rates are the same as previous years. The fee for a single student rider is $75.00 per school year, or a family rate of $100.00 per year for two or more students living in the same household. Payment is due at the time of registration for the cross-town busing service. Registration for the cross-town busing option may be completed at the District Office between the hours of 7:50am and 4:00pm beginning July 19, 2010.

The Board of Education approved the 2010-11 sponsors for all activities. All activities and programs that were in place during last year will still be available to students. For students participating in athletics who will be in grades 8-12, physicals are available August 7th from 8-noon at Waverly Urgent Care. Please call to make an appointment.

Enrollment in District 145 finished the year with 1759 students in grades K-12, the same number of students that started last fall. Eagle elementary enrollment increased by ten students during the year and the schools in Waverly decreased a total of ten students. Anticipated enrollment for August 2010 is expected to be 1780 students. According to our most recent information, the smallest grade level for 2010-11 will be 12th grade with 108 students and the largest student numbers is anticipated in grade 11 with 157.

The Board of Education has held several meetings regarding plans to address water issues at Waverly High School. Plans for a drain tile system (interior and exterior) have been approved. Bids for the project will occur in July with work to begin prior to the start of school. Once the moisture levels under the gym have sufficiently decreased, the gym floor will be replaced.
