High School Drain Tile Project

Progress Update December 1

by Bill Heimann

December 01, 2010

December 1 report: The gym floor is finished. Work continues in preparation for the first home basketball game (items listed in Nov. 22 report). It is on schedule to be completed and should be ready for occupation on December 9th - just in time for the first home basketball game! Exterior construction is nearly complete on the drain tile system, with a few "minor" items still to be finished.

November 22 report:   High School Drain Tile Progress (Click to view slide show of progress)

The high school gym floor is on schedule. The final coat of finish has been applied this week. Starting November 29th, there are a number of items that still need to be completed in the gym, including:

cleaning ductwork, rafters, walls, and bleachers; doorway thresholds will be installed, base molding along the walls will be installed; electrical work needs to be completed, score boards installed, need to fix a problem with the bleacher motors, test the sound system (after electrical work finished); adjust height of basketball backboards (new floor is 1/2 inch taller than previous floor); install wall mats; banners and flag hung in the gym.

These tasks are being coordinated to be ready for use by the first home basketball game on December 9th

October 26 report:

The exterior drain system is nearing completion - all drain tile is installed, drain inlets are near completion, the concrete "low flow liner" to the west of the high school is more than 75% finished. Drain tile has been installed at the main entrances on the north and south side of the high school, and new concrete has been poured at the entrances.

Inside the main gym, approximately 75% of the new floor has been installed and sanded. There is a portion of "old" floor (25%) that has yet to be removed. This will occur once the bleachers can be moved from one side of the gym to the other. The timeline reported in the October 4th update is still accurate.

October 14 report:

Nearly one year after moisture caused the gym floor to warp, installation of the new floor in the main gym has begun. On October 13, thousands of pounds of flooring and materials were unloaded. The underlayment and subfloor is being installed. The exterior drain tile system has made great progress thanks to fantastic weather. Inlet drains are being installed, and concrete for the low-flow liner to the west of the high school is nearing completion. The south entrance to the high school will have concrete removed on October 18.

October 4 report:

The exterior drain tile system has been installed on the west, south and east sides of the high school. Work continues on the north side (including main entrance) and the "low flow liner" to the west of the building. As soon as the north entrance is accessible, the planned construction for the south entrance will be next. The exterior project is scheduled to be completed the week of October 18.

Preparations are under way for the installation of the main gym floor. Maple flooring has been ordered. The time line for gym floor installation is:
October 13 – Delivery of Materials and floor installation process begins
October 27 – Sanding of the floor
November 10 – Paint Court Markings
November 22 – Apply Finish onto floor
November 24 – Final coat of finish
November 29 – Door saddles and floor base along wall installed; One week cure time
December 6 – Gym Floor ready for use

September 27 report:

Drain tile has been installed under the main gym floor. Concrete was poured in the trenches on Monday, September 20. The volleyball standards have been dug out of the concrete and replaced. This is because the new floor we are putting in will be fractionally higher. This requires us to change the standards so they will be at the correct height when the new floor is installed.

Delivery of the wood for the floor will occur in early October dependent upon the processing time necessary at the factory. From the date of delivery, it will likely be six weeks before the floor is completed and the finish has time to cure properly before use of the gym will be allowed.

The exterior drain system project has been hampered a bit by rain. The drain tile system under the gym floor is tied into the exterior drain tile system on the south side of the gym.Low-flow liner to the west of the auxiliary gym will be completed soon. The drain tile on the east side and north side of the high school continues to make progress. The pipe to the northeast drainage ditch is completed. Drain tile still needs to be added to the main entrance on both the south and north side of the building.

August 23 report:

After many months of investigation and planning, the Board of Education approved a bid from Rush Creek Construction to begin installation of an interior and exterior drain tile system to resolve the water issue that has plagued the Waverly High School main gym for the past year.

At a special board meeting on August 16, Rush Creek's low bid of $194,554 was accepted.

The main gym will have drain tile installed around the perimeter and three laterals under the concrete floor. An exterior drain tile system will be installed around the perimeter of the high school building.

Actual construction is scheduled to commence the week of August 23, with a completion date of October 1. The next phase of the project will be to install a new gym floor, scheduled to be completed in November.
