District Update 12-7-10

by Bill Heimann

December 06, 2010

The purpose of this update is to share information regarding:
1. High school gym floor
2. Board of Education December 6th meeting summary, including an update regarding district finances.

The high school gym floor is finished!! We are still completing cleaning and other final tasks, but we will be ready to host the first home varsity basketball games of the season on December 9th. The drain tile project outside the high school has a few final touches that need to be completed as well. The landscaping and seeding will occur in the spring.

The following is a summary of the December 6th Board of Education meeting, provided from the superintendent’s perspective:

Waverly Middle School sixth grade students, parents, and Mr. Picquet gave an excellent presentation. They shared how they collected and donated more than 8500 lbs of goods to the People's City Mission, plus an additional 500 lbs. to the Eagle Food Pantry and 500 lbs. to the Waverly Food Pantry! As a point of reference, the People’s City Mission uses approximately 10,000 lbs per month of food items. The students also shared life lessons they learned.

Administrators provided written reports that highlighted many student and staff accomplishments.

The superintendent reported:
*The Eastern Midlands Conference had a unanimous vote during first reading for approval to add Bennington in 2012-13.  An interview process was conducted, including a site visit. If the second reading is approved by conference schools on December 8th, this will expand the conference to 10 high schools. Commitment to all activities (not just athletics) and an emphasis on sportsmanship were key issues that were reviewed regarding whether Bennington matches the ideals of the EMC schools.
*Thanks to Mr. Robin Hoffman, Business Manager for finding a way to save approximately $500/month in our phone bill after examining current charges and usage patterns with Windstream; then implementing a new service plan.
*Staff climate survey results. 435 open-ended comments were made. Building results will be shared with each principal, and then a summary of results will be used in each building to identify commendations and potential areas for improvement. Parent survey will be conducted during second semester in conjunction with parent-teacher conferences.

2. Amended a property easement to allow the Village of Eagle to place an emergency siren on the easement adjacent to Eagle elementary.
3. Accepted the 2009-10 fiscal audit.
4. Revised board policy 2200 on first reading, and approved second reading for policy 5000, 5002, 8360 and 9362.
5. Approved a change order from Rush Creek Construction.
6. Approved a request for mid-term graduation of a high school student.
7. Approved Board of Education Goals
8. Conducted the performance evaluation of the superintendent.
9. Approved the superintendent contract through June 30, 2013 with compensation to be determined at a later date.
