District Update 2-4-11

by Bill Heimann

February 03, 2011

The purpose of this update is to share information regarding the agenda and actions taken at the February board of education meeting, which included amending the budget and approving the 2011-12 calendar; and to highlight teacher web pages. The following is a summary of the February 3rd regular meeting, provided from the superintendent’s perspective.

Dennis Francke convened the regular meeting by asking for a moment of silence dedicated to the memory of Ginny Rohren, District 145 employee, who had been employed at Hamlow elementary since 1975 as a teacher assistant; and Dennis also asked that board member Dale Rolofson be kept in our thoughts as he recovers from injuries sustained in a serious accident.

Ms. Hunt, Director of Special Education, presented information regarding the special education services provided in the district. The superintendent shared information regarding federal stimulus funds and the impact of the financial “cliff effect” as we begin the budget planning process for 2011-12 school year.

Board members reviewed new committee assignments, reported on the legislative issues conference they attended, and heard a report from the buildings and grounds committee. As part of the consent agenda, the board accepted the resignation of Lori Rezac, speech/language pathologist and accepted the hiring of Tammy Tegler as varsity tennis coach.

The board took action to amend the Bond Fund by $3,320,000 to reflect the call for redemption of the Series 2004 General Obligation Bonds and the issuance of the Series 2010 General Obligation Refunding Bonds. The bond fund budget will be increased from $4,752,637.00 to $8,072,637.00.  The tax requirement and tax levy for 2010-11 are not affected by this addition. The revision is required to provide additional budget authority to pay the outstanding principal on the Series 2004 Bonds. The refinancing of the bonds will save the district's taxpayers $298,000 in interest payments over the remaining terms of the bonds.

The Board of Education took action to:

  1. Approve the 2011-12 school calendar, click here to view.
  2. Approve board policy 5023 on second reading to increase math/science graduation requirements for the class of 2015.
  3. Recognize the Waverly Education Association as the faculty bargaining agent.
  4. Approve an inter-local agreement with Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office to provide a school resource officer. The new contract runs from August 1, 2011 to July 31, 2013; year one at a cost of $10,852.

The Board discussed:

  1. District climate survey results. A parent climate survey will be conducted during parent-teacher conferences in February.
  2. Legislative issues that may impact school districts.
  3. Work session scheduled for February 12th (8:00am)
  4. Attendance at future board trainings/workshops.

The use of technology in classrooms allows students to expand their knowledge, and can be utilized to engage students in learning, so it is not limited to just their time in the classroom. Information posted on teacher web sites does more than provide class assignments, calendars and homework tips (although that is helpful too). Students become more engaged in learning when technology is used, and they can display what they know to the entire world. Technology should not be the focus of the learning, rather it should support and enhance what occurs in the classroom.

The following are a few of our teacher web sites. Take a look if you have not already done so. The creation of these sites takes additional time and energy - ask the students if it makes a difference!
