District Update 3-9-11

by Bill Heimann

March 09, 2011

The purpose of this update is to share information regarding activities in the district as well as the actions taken at the March board of education meeting.

The following is a summary of the March 7 regular meeting, provided from the superintendent’s perspective.

After convening the regular meeting, Mr. Craig Patzel, WIS principal, introduced two teachers, Christine Sears and Angie Harris. They presented a video produced by WIS teachers. They explained the math problem solving process they have implemented, with student interviews included in the video.

The superintendent shared information regarding pending legislation; talked about the Waverly High School band performance at the Nebraska Band Masters Association conference, as well as reading to Hamlow elementary students for Read Across America.

Board members reported on recent workshops attended, about reading to elementary students, and discussed the March 2 parent forum at the high school regarding drugs and alcohol.  Board thanked the Foundation for Education for funding $5006 in teacher grants, and sponsoring the Youth Frontiers retreat for 5th grade students on March 9. FFE golf tournament scheduled for June 4. The buildings and grounds committee reported the door replacement project is ready to go out for bid, with bid openings scheduled for March 24. The 10 year old riding mower will be replaced this spring, and specifications are being determined for the purchase of new school buses.

As part of the consent agenda, the board accepted the resignation of Wendy Boitnott, WHS special education teacher and accepted the hiring of Shanna Shafer, WHS special education teacher; Tara Bohaboj, WHS business teacher, and Jessica Brown, WHS speech-language pathologist. Approval was also given for Michelle Henrickson, health assistant at WIS, as well as approval of volunteer coaches for the spring athletic season. Memorials from the family of Ginny Rohren were accepted as a donation to Hamlow Elementary.

The Board of Education took action to:

  1. Approve the Waverly Community Pre-School contract for 2011-12
  2. Change the 2010-11 school calendar due to inclement weather. Last day for students will be May 20, last day for teachers May 25. If additional student days are missed this year for inclement weather, additional student days will be added (as noted on the 2010-11 calendar).
  3. To approve district goals presented at the Feb. 12 board work session.

The Board discussed:

  1. School resource officer that is shared between Waverly and Raymond Central. Regardless of whether or not R-C enters into a contract for next year, Waverly will have a deputy from Lancaster County.
  2. Copy machine lease – currently reviewing bids for new equipment that will improve the efficiency in the district.
  3. Attendance at future board trainings/workshops.
  4. Budget work session on March 16 at 6:00pm; regular meeting April 4.
