by Bill Heimann

June 07, 2011

The purpose of this update is to share information regarding activities in the district.

We completed another successful and exciting school year highlighted by the individual and collective growth of our students. The following is a summary of the June 6 board of education meeting, provided from the superintendent’s perspective.

After convening the regular meeting, Mr. Mitchell Stine, Activities Director, shared information about the Activities program and its many successes over the past year. (Download summary in PDF) He shared that the Eastern Midlands Conference will lose long-time member Platteview in the 2012-13 school year, and will be replaced by Bennington. Since Waverly finished 8th (out of 9) in the EMC sportsmanship voting, Mr. Stine indicated a focus for the upcoming year will be to improve sportsmanship amongst our students, staff, and spectators.

The superintendent shared information regarding legislation that was passed this year; and state aid for 2011-12. The Foundation for Education was thanked for their efforts as they hosted a golf tournament to raise funds to benefit the district. The Dare to Share organization hosted its second annual car show to benefit the district’s Backpack program to support food for students in need. Board members provided committee reports regarding facilities and curriculum.

As part of the consent agenda, the board accepted the resignation of Stephanie Schernikau, special education teacher; and the retirements of bus drivers Ed Tichota and Sandy Graham.

Approved were the following hires and reassignments for 2011-12:

  1. Lisa Graham, Waverly High School, reassignment as English teacher (replaces Vicki Gale)
  2. Alicia Dallman, Waverly High School, reassignment as English/Spanish teacher (replaces Lisa Graham)
  3. Monica Olsen, Waverly High School, Spanish teacher (replaces Alicia Dallman).
  4. Carissa Stock, Waverly High School, Special Education teacher (replaces Stephanie Schernikau).
  5. Gretchen Antholz, Hamlow Elementary, First Grade teacher (additional classroom section).

The Board of Education took action to:

  1. Accept a donation from the PTE for the Eagle elementary playground in the amount of $2309.
  2. Approve the refinancing of bonds.

The most recent refinancing of bonds has an overall debt service savings of $879,109.60. This will translate into an annual savings to district taxpayers of $58,607 over the remaining life of these bonds, which mature in 2025.

  1. Approve the contracts for three new administrators beginning July 1, 2011. Mrs. Michelle Rezek as Hamlow Elementary principal; Mr. Brad McMillan as Middle School Assistant principal; Mrs. Delanie McMillan as Director of Special Education.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled on July 6, 2011.
