School Improvement Planning, October 17, 2011

October 18, 2011

Days when students do not have school are essential for teacher learning. October 17 was one such day. The principals and teams of teachers from each building designed the improvement activities for the day. October 17 is a continuation from the previous in-service day on September 12.

In the morning, teachers reviewed the current practices in each building that connect to the mission and beliefs of their respective buildings and the district. Conversations focused upon what should we be doing, and the next steps.

During the morning, teachers reviewed the process to create an individual goal that will focus on improving student learning in the classroom. As part of the process, teachers analyze artifacts, practices, student’s strengths and areas for improvement. They review and share artifacts with a teacher team, and write a S.M.A.R.T. goal. The reason why the goals are completed in October is to allow teachers to have time this fall to better know their students and to collect data to establish a goal that will match the students in their classroom.

While the morning is spent working collaboratively with colleagues, the afternoon is used as individual time for teachers to complete report cards, meet with each other to talk about student progress and prepare for upcoming lessons and activities.
