District Update 11-8-11

November 08, 2011

In less than two months, we will be at the half-way point of the 2011-12 school year! Every day is a critical piece of the puzzle towards meeting student learning goals in School District 145. District updates each month is a way to provide information and to share a few highlights regarding our school district.

November Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on November 7 at the district office. During each monthly meeting the board receives a presentation. In November, Director of Learning, Mr. Scott Blum, gave an update regarding our school improvement process. His presentation focused on the systems in our district that will ultimately enhance student learning. He shared specific information using student writing to demonstrate one example regarding how administrators and teachers are working together to improve classroom instruction to impact students. In December, an external accreditation team will visit the school district as part of our accreditation process. AdvancED is an organization that identifies standards for education. Visit the AdvancED website to learn more about the accreditation process.

According to AdvancED: "While accreditation is a set of rigorous protocols and research-based processes for evaluating an institution’s organizational effectiveness, it is far more than that. Today accreditation examines the whole institution—the programs, the cultural context, the community of stakeholders—to determine how well the parts work together to meet the needs of students."

Board committees met prior to the meeting. Reports were given from the Building/Grounds/Transportation and the Performance and Assessment Committee.

Donations were accepted from Verizon Wireless ($1000) to be used for the Activities Program, and Horizon Bank ($3738) to pay the annual cost for the district alert system.

The Board took action to:

1. Approve Option Enrollment Capacity for 2012-13. Board policy 5008 establishes the procedure to set the option enrollment limits.

2. Approve a HVAC equipment and HVAC automation service contract.

3. Approve the second reading of policies 2245 Middle School Assistant Principal, 2250 High School Assistant Principal, 2255 High School Assistant Principal/Activities Director, 2260 Director of Learning, 5002 Admission, 6900 Gifted and Talented Students. These policies will be updated on the district website.

4. Approve second reading of policy 6025 Special Education and rescind policies current policies 6030, 6045, 6060, 6075, 6100, 6115, 6130, 6145, 6160, 6175, 6200, 6215, 6230. This policy will be updated on the district website.

5. Approve first reading of policy 6500 Curriculum Review and Adoption.

6. Approve compensation as negotiated with the Waverly Education Association, effective for the 2011-12 school year.

7. Approve wages for classified staff, effective for the 2011-12.

8. Approve salaries for administrative staff, effective for 2011-12.

9. Approve a resolution to designate the boundaries of the six election districts for the school district.

Monitor Student Lunch Accounts On-Line: Starting with the 2011-12 school year, parents are able to access student lunch account balances through a website. Parents have been requesting this and several hundred parents already take advantage of this option. There is a link on the right side of our website home page "LUNCH BALANCE" that will take you directly to this website.

If you need a login and password, click here to learn more. This system will send an e-mail to parents when student accounts have a low balance, and parents may also monitor the days students are eating and what is being charged to the account.

Many parents have asked if on-line payments are accepted. This feature is in the process of being implemented and we expect to provide this option for parents who are interested. More information will be shared as it is available.

District 145 School Messenger Alert System

New this school year is a message alert system that has the capability to make automatic phone calls to parents and staff, as well as send e-mail notifications and text alerts simultaneously. It is important that parent contact information is accurate so timely information is received. Please contact your child's school to update your information if your phone number, address or e-mail has changed. Although this system is primarily for emergency situations, such as school cancellation due to weather, it may also be used to notify parents at a particular school building of a change in schedule or other general announcements.

If you wish to receive an alert via text message, you must sign up for this service. Note this is a different service from 2010-11, so if you want to receive the alerts, you must do again.

11/13/2011 Thanks again for sending out this information. There is a wealth of knowledge in and attached to this email. The only portion in which I wanted to comment is the QSP fundraising number in the Middle School Newsletter. Listed in the letter is 108677 but on the website it is 1086771. You can also search for "Waverly Middle School" and find it from there. Just thought you may want to know.
