AdvancED External Team Exit Report

December 19, 2011

On December 12-14, an external accreditation team visited School District 145 - Waverly as part of our accreditation process. AdvancED is an international organization that identifies standards for education. Visit the AdvancED website to learn more about the accreditation process.

According to AdvancED: "While accreditation is a set of rigorous protocols and research-based processes for evaluating an institution’s organizational effectiveness, it is far more than that. Today accreditation examines the whole institution—the programs, the cultural context, the community of stakeholders—to determine how well the parts work together to meet the needs of students."

The five-person team spent two days interviewing teachers, staff, students, administrators, school board members, and parents gathering evidence to determine district accreditation. Team members visited each school building and in addition to the interviews, they also conducted classroom observations.

AdvancED assigned the members of the team. District-wide accreditation requires that two members of the team (including the chair) are from outside of Nebraska. Ms. Kathy Reifschneider, from Festus R-6 School District, lead the team. Other team members included vice-chair Ms. Andie Maupin (Bellevue Public Schools), Dr. Chad Dumas (Hastings Public Schools), Ms. Brenda Tracy (Norris Public Schools), and Ms. Mary Ann Irwin (North Miami Community Schools).

They presented the "exit" report to approximately fifty people at the Waverly High School auditorium at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14.  A full report will be provided to the district at a later date. The team shared many positives from their visit.

Commendations were given for:

1.Significant support for the school system through strong community involvement and participation.
2.The school board, district leadership, and teachers have created a climate that encourages collaboration, is committed to student learning and achievement, and fosters deep concern and caring for student and families.

3. Commitment to a comprehensive K‐12 systems approach to curriculum alignment through the use of the Curriculum Tool Box.
4. A positive and safe school climate facilitated through building leadership, staff, and students that promotes effective student learning.

As part of any continuous improvement process, required actions were identified. The items must be addressed over the next two years, and a report must be submitted to AdvancED to verify completion of these actions.

The Quality Assurance Review Team has determined that District 145 ‐Waverly must act on the following:
1.Establish and implement a process to develop a District Improvement Plan that provides a strategic direction for schools, departments and services and involves all stakeholders.
2.Develop and implement a comprehensive assessment system using both state and local assessments, based on student achievement data analysis and aligned with the district’s expectations for student learning.

3. Engage effective communication and collaborative relationships with and among its external stakeholders at the district level.

A special thanks to the school improvement teams and principals from each building, as well as Mr. Scott Blum, Director of Learning, for leadership throughout this process. The accreditation process validates the educational opportunities already in place, and provides us additional direction as we continue to strive for ways to improve.
