January 06, 2012

Happy New Year from School District 145!

2011 was a year full of accomplishments in our school district. Congratulations to Olivia Boender for being the latest addition the Athletic Wall of Fame at Waverly High School (pictured).

We are striving to improve and make 2012 an even better year.

The Waverly High School Career Academy will expand this semester (Article courtesy of Waverly News). To learn more about the Career Academies click here to watch a brief You Tube video. Thanks to a partnership with Southeast Community College and area school districts, we are able to provide these opportunities for students. The Career Academy student tuition for Waverly High School was paid for by a donation from Pinnacle Bank in Waverly.

Congratulations to the Waverly High School Girls Basketball team for a huge win at home to start 2012 (Article courtesy of the Lincoln Journal Star).

During each monthly meeting the board receives a presentation. Mrs. Michelle Rezek, Hamlow Elementary principal, joined Hamlow staff members to share their emphasis on writing instruction this year and its positive impact on students. To conclude the presentation, one second grade student read a story she had written and illustrated! Click here to read the Hamlow report.

The AdvancED External Team School Improvement Visit was discussed, and it was noted that the initial report was very positive and reflected well upon the district students, staff, and communities. Multiple written reports submitted to the Board included specific comments regarding our continuous improvement process.

The Board took action to:

1. Approve an agreement with “Travel With Barb” to provide transportation, lodging, and meals for the Waverly High School Band trip to Orlando, Florida in May 2013. Students will be conduct fundraising for the costs of the trip.

2. Approve the purchase of thirty band uniforms to address the growing numbers of students in the program. The district will add to its budget in 2012-13 a portion of the replacement costs for  band uniforms. This will continue for future years until enough funds can be accumulated to cover the estimated $100,000 cost for replacement of all band uniforms.

3. Authorize the superintendent or designee to contract for installation of window coverings at Waverly Middle School.

4. Approve renewal of participation in the Southeast Nebraska Powerschool interlocal cooperative. Power School is the student management software program for the district.

Board discussion included consideration of proposals from Nebraska Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center and from BryanLGH and Lincoln Orthopedic to provide athletic trainer services to Waverly High School students. The board will consider action at its February meeting.

The next board meeting will be held Thursday, February 2, 7:00 P.M. The meeting was moved due to a conflict with a board training and development conference.
