District News Update 2-3-12

February 03, 2012

This update includes district news and events, plus a summary of the February board of education meeting. Our new school alert system, School Messenger, has improved communication with parents. Automated phone calls, e-mail and text alerts were made February 2-3 to WHS parents when school activities were delayed or re-scheduled due to pending winter storm. In October 2011, there were 339 "hits" on the superintendent's district update. After utilizing the new messaging system to reach a wider audience, 820 "hits" were recorded for the Jan. 2, 2012 district update.

Last month's district update stated that we are striving to make 2012 a great year. The following are only a few examples that illustrate that if the past month is any indication, we are off to an excellent start!

February 2012 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on February 2 at the district office. The meeting was moved from its regular first Monday of the month session to allow school board members to attend a conference in Kearney on Feb. 6-7.

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mrs. Delanie McMillan, Direction of Special Education, provided information regarding the services provided to students and the mission statement that has been drafted by the Special Education staff. Click here to read the written report.

Written reports provided to the Board include:

Eagle Elementary Hamlow Elementary Waverly Intermediate School
Middle School High School Performance and Assessment Committee

Reports were given from the Building/Grounds/Transportation Committee and the Performance and Assessment committee, as well as individual reports from board members that attended the Legislative conference in Lincoln on January 23.

The superintendent report included information regarding the Waverly Planning Commission meeting and the district's participation in the city of Waverly's Comprehensive Plan; proposed legislation for School District Accountability; proposed legislation to change the state school funding finance formula and move the certification date for state aid to May 1 (from March 1).

The Board took action to:

1. Approve a travel request from the Waverly High School Drama Department (summer 2012).

2. Approve continued participation in the Nebraska Joint Utilities Management Program. This is a consortium of school districts that provides natural gas to the district at the best possible rates.

3. Table a decision regarding the Athletic Training Services Contract until next month.

4. Recognized the Waverly Education Association as Faculty Bargaining Agent for 2013-14.

5. Approve the 2012-13 District Calendar. Two separate staff surveys were conducted (November and January) to identify how to maximize the allocation of instructional days.

6. Approve the 2011-12 Negotiated Agreement with the Waverly Transportation Association.

The Board discussed:

1. Hiring a high school math teacher for 2012-13. Nebraska Department of Education will require three years of high school math (formerly two), which has created the need for additional course offerings.

2. Waiting until kindergarten enrollment numbers are better known to determine if hiring an additional elementary teacher for 2012-13 will be needed.

3. Timeline for budget calendar for 2012-13.

4. Consideration to hire Dr. Don Fritz as a consultant (FGR Group) to facilitate a district strategic planning process. Dr. Fritz has supported similar processes in other school districts to help gather information from district stakeholders to provide input to the board regarding future priorities.

The next regular monthly board meeting will be held Monday, March 5, 7:00 P.M.

If there are suggestions for future district updates, information you would like to know more about, or comments, please post your feedback or contact the district office.
