District News Update 4-3-12

This update includes district news and events, plus a summary of the April board of education meeting.

Another month has gone by, with plenty of examples of excellence that can be found in School District 145!

District 145 Foundation for Education continues its tremendous support of teachers and students by providing thousands of dollars in classroom grants. Click to see photos of recipients and visit FFE website.

Waverly High School students compete at many competitions and activities, including FFA. Caitlin Davis placed 7th in Persuasive at the State Speech. The Waverly Boys Track Team won the Nebraska Wesleyan Indoor Meet...the list goes on and on, view the WHS Facebook page for additional information.

April 2012 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on April 3 at Eagle Elementary. During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mrs. Dottie Heusman, Eagle Elementary School Principal, introduced two teachers that presented information regarding their collaboration to teach students using inclusive practices that includes all students. A video provided an example of a student who has demonstrated improvement in reading comprehension, and several students from different grade levels presented to the board regarding what they have learned through reading and writing instruction. 

Reports were given from the Building/Grounds/Transportation Committee and the Policy committee.

The superintendent report included information regarding the legislation that was recently approved, including changes to compulsory attendance and state accountability system. An update on the AdvancEd accreditation process was provided.

The Board took action to:

1. Approve the purchase of Social Studies Curriculum and resource materials for grades K-12 in an amount not to exceed $150,000. (Estimated cost is $141,000)

2. Authorize the superintendent or designee to advertise for Request for Qualifications seeking proposals from qualified Energy Service Companies to provide comprehensive professional and technical services to design, engineer, and construct energy conservation projects (heating and cooling) at Eagle Elementary and Waverly Intermediate School.

There are three heating (roof top) units at Eagle Elementary and one at Waverly Intermediate School that are no longer operational. The units have reached the end of their life expectancy. The RFQ will allow the district to gather more information and proceed accordingly.

3. Accept the resignation of Mr. Picquet, MS Principal; Mr. McLey, Director of Technology; Ms. Brown and Mrs. Stock, Special Education teachers at Waverly High School; Rita Weber, district courier who will retire effective April 30.

4. Approve teacher contracts for 2012-13: Mallory Gregory, MS/HS Family and Consumer Science; Cody Gregory, WHS Math. 

5. Approve Larry Adams as district maintenance/electrican.

6. Accept donations: $5,000 from Archer Daniels Midland Company to Waverly High School Robotics; $1,500 from Waverly Lions Club to District Student Health Services; $500 from State Farm to Waverly High School Girls Basketball Program.
