District News Update 11-12-12

Congratulations to the Waverly High School Volleyball team! Click to read about their success at the state tournament! 

"Cyber parenting" presentation will occur at Waverly High School on November 27 at 7:00pm. Social media is an issue that many students, staff, and adults want to learn more about, so our school district will provide this important session that you will not want to miss. Hamlow Elementary joined the other buildings in the district to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October. Click here to view article.

All-State auditions were held on October 13. Waverly High School had twenty-four instrumental students and 11 vocal students participate in the audition process.

Congratulations to Waverly High School students who were selected to the All-State Band: Tanner Buresh, Alyssa Pracht, Lindsey VanArsdall, Emily Clark, Katie Monson, and Malorie Geiler.

Congratulations to Leah Obenland, Waverly High School student selected to the All-State Choir! 
Patrick Riley and Stephanie Tabor were selected as an alternate for the All-State Choir! 

Three Waverly band members participated at the Doane Fall Festival of Winds Honor Band on November 3.  Selected by audition were Katie Monson, trombone; Emily Clark, French Horn; and Alyssa Pracht, oboe.

November 2012 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on November 5. During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mrs. McCallum, Elementary Media Specialist, presented information regarding the High Ability Learning program. Mr. Scott Blum, Director of Learning, explained the new state accountability model that will be released to the public on November 20.   

The superintendent reported on state volleyball and dismissal of school for students, Cyberparenting presentation, Youth Frontiers Retreats, and the School/Community Planning meetings.

Committee reports were received from Building/Grounds/Transportation; Policy; Performance and Assessment, and a report about the Foundation for Education quarterly meeting. 

The Board action included:

1. Approve the option enrollment capacity for 2013-14 school year. 

2. Approve the Safe Routes to School grant for Eagle Elementary.

3. Approve mid-term graduation request.

4. Accept bids for surplus vehicles. 

5. Approve the resignation of Katie Cupp, WHS special education teacher, at the end of first semester. 

6. Approve second reading of board policies - no changes from first reading last month. 

The Board discussed: Refinancing general obligation bond series 2008; Educators Health Alliance Insurance premiums for 2013-14; Board self-assessment; Upcoming meetings and activities. 

December Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, December 3.
