District News Update 5-07-13

April showers bring May flowers! The May 2013 District 145 News Update includes examples of student success and celebrations, plus a summary of the May 6 Board of Education meeting.

The third Sunday in May marks the culmination of the school year for the Class of 2013. The senior class has represented their school and communities well. The commencement ceremony begins at 2:00pm on May 19, 2013 at Waverly High School.

Congratulations to WHS Boys Soccer on your Runner Up finish at Districts!

Emily Brummond and Eric Herr are Waverly High School nominees for the "Best in Class" program through Channel 8 KLKN-TV because of their academic achievement. The program is designed to recognize and encourage academic excellence. Seniors from Waverly and other schools within the viewing area will be brought together at Southeast Community College in Lincoln. The students will be videotaped individually and as a group. This video footage will be edited into a series of special announcements that will air on Channel 8 throughout the graduation season. Congratulations to both outstanding students!

May 2013 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on May 6, 2013. 

The Board of Education recognized WHS student Caitlin Davis as a state champion in Speech. She will be competing in a national competition later this month!

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mr. Bingham, Director of Technology, presented information regarding staff training to incorporate the use of technology, hardware, communication tools, and a plan to continue to improve technology in the district.    

The superintendent reported on the state legislative session. Proposed legislation currently shows our district would receive a decrease in state aid of $189,934 for 2013-14. A draft of the City of Waverly Comprehensive plan was provided, as well as a summary of information from parent surveys conducted during the second semester.

Multiple committee reports were received from Building/Grounds/Transportation, Planning and Development, and the Policy Committee. Board member Cheryl Landon reported on the Foundation for Education quarterly meeting and her attendance at school activities and events.  

The Board action included:

1. Acceptance of resignations and hiring of personnel. 

2. Acceptance of a donation from Horizon Bank ($3895) to be used to pay for the School Messenger Alert System for the district.

3.  Approval of the conditional list of Waverly High School graduates, pending completion of all local and state requirements.

4. Amendment of the Qualified Capital Purpose Undertaking Fund Budget for the purpose of paying for the heating and cooling improvement project at Hamlow Elementary School. 

5. Approval of board policies regarding bylaws for the Board of Education.

6. Approval of the Waverly High School as an American Red Cross Emergency shelter facility.

7. Approval of additional extra-duty positions for weight lifting and WMS track.

The board discussed the process to review staff climate survey results, and the strategic planning process, was well as upcoming meetings and activities.

The June Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013.
