District News Update August 6, 2013

It is almost time to start another school year! District 145 teaching staff will officially return on Monday, August 12 to finalize preparations for the 2013-14 school year.

The first day of school for students in grades 6-12 is Wednesday, August 14 and elementary students will begin on Thursday, August 15. Please contact the individual school for additional questions.

Summer time has been filled with many projects to get ready for the school year. Parking lots have been repainted and asphalt repairs at Waverly High School and Waverly Intermediate School are occurring, gym floors have been refinished, rubber membrane roof repairs have occurred at Eagle Elementary and Waverly High School.  Concrete replacement at Viking Stadium around the concession area was completed, drainage improvements (including concrete) on the north side of Eagle Elementary is scheduled to be completed, and concrete work at Hamlow Elementary will occur soon. The ductwork in the Waverly High School Commons area has been painted, and painting at many buildings has occurred as part of summer maintenance.

Hamlow Elementary heating and cooling project is nearing completion. This week the new geothermal system is being put into operation and all custodians in the district are converging on Hamlow to complete necessary cleaning to prepare the building for students and staff. A special thank you to Trane, especially project superintendent Gary Voss, and District 145 Business Manager Robin Hoffman for maintaining an aggressive schedule that will allow us to start school on time.

In one week, we will welcome many new faces among our 1,825 students. We also have eleven new teachers joining our staff this year. We are looking forward to a great year!

August 2013 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on August 5 at the District Office.

Mr. Dan Mussmann, Waverly High School Activities Director, was welcomed to the district.

The superintendent reported on the schedule for the school year, the City of Waverly Comprehensive Plan, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, state test results from 2012-13 will be released to the public on August 13, and the damage to fencing at Waverly Middle School from a traffic accident on I-80 is being repaired.

Committee reports were given from the Building/Grounds/Transportation.  

The Board took action to:

1. Set athletic admission prices.

2. Set the daily substitute teacher rate.

3. Approve the milk bid from Robert's Dairy.

The Board discussed:

A. State Aid Formula Review Meetings attended by Business Manager Mr. Robin Hoffman as a participant. The meetings involved school district officials across the state, as well as representatives from the Nebraska Department of Education and the State Legislature's Education Committee. 

B. Strategic Planning process and the next steps to identify facility priorities. 

C. Presentation schedule for monthly meetings

D. Future meetings and upcoming events.
