State Testing Results and Accountability

On Tuesday, August 13 the Nebraska Department of Education published test scores from the previous school year for all school districts.

Last spring, 3rd-8th and 11th grade students participated in the Nebraska State Accountability Test (NeSA).  The statewide reading test (NeSA-R), and math test (NeSA-M) were given in grades 3-8, 11. NeSA-S (science) was taken by grades 5, 8, and 11. Statewide writing (NeSA-W) was taken by students in grades 4, 8, 11.

Parents will receive their child's "Individual Student Report," which will be sent home with students on August 16. More detailed information regarding public schools in Nebraska will be available in the State of Schools Report, which is scheduled to be released to the public by NDE on September 27.

The best source of information for any individual child regarding the academic performance is the classroom teacher. Our continual school improvement plan is dependent upon teacher-led and/or teacher involved processes. Each building in our district will be reviewing NeSA data during School Improvement Process activities.

Regarding the NeSA scores in our district, our average scale score at each building was comparable to, or above the state average in nearly all categories. The vast majority of our students meet or exceed the state proficiency expectations. NeSA Reading and writing performance continues to be very strong. Math scores improved. The math average scale score, and the percent of students proficient increased in nearly every category from 2012 to 2013. Science results are similar to state averages.

Last school year, our teachers dug into the data. Our teachers are very involved in our school improvement process and professional development work that has been done. Our faculty and administrators have developed plans and are implementing it. Our focus on language arts for the past few years is definitely making a difference. In the area of math, we have examined our curriculum alignment to state standards, identified possible gaps or areas of overlap in the curriculum, we have examined when math content is taught in relation to when it is tested, and we continue to make adjustments based on the information. We have added math courses at WMS and WHS, and our secondary math teachers continue to collaborate and identify best instructional practices to use in the classroom.

Although NeSA information is important, it will not become our focus, nor will we draw conclusions from just the NeSA data. Standardized test results provide another effective tool to improve instruction for every child but no single test score can tell the full story about the performance of an individual student or a school building or a district. Please remember, one test cannot reflect all of the learning that takes place. Our staff is "Committed to Excellence" to provide the best possible educational opportunities for all students. We are pleased with the results, but we are not satisfied. We will focus on the positive results and continue to strive to get better.
