Lisa Graham Honored as Excellence in Teaching Award Winner

Lisa Graham teaches language arts at Waverly High School. On November 7, 2013 she was honored during a ceremony as an Excellence in Teaching Award Winner. Ms. Graham was one of four finalists for Nebraska's Teacher of the Year award.

The National Teacher of the Year Program began in 1952 as a means of recognizing outstanding teachers. The Nebraska Teacher of the Year Program has been in place since 1972 and affords an opportunity to honor dedicated teachers for excellence in classroom teaching. The Nebraska Department of Education coordinates events surrounding Teacher of the Year activities, working with the Nebraska State Education Association, Nebraska Association of School Boards, Nebraska Council of School Administrators, Nebraska Parent-Teacher Association, The Sherwood Foundation, Union Bank & Trust Company, the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, Inc., ConAgra Foods Foundation.

Since coming to Waverly High School in 2005, Lisa Graham has taught language arts, Spanish and German. Ms. Graham challenges her students each and every day.  Her classroom environment is centered around engagement, rigor, respect, responsibility, collaboration, and the challenge to get better every day.  She is focused on each individual student at all times.

Mr. Ryan Ricenbaw, Waverly High School principal wrote in his letter of recommendation: "Ms. Graham is the facilitator of learning in the classroom and provides the necessary tools for every student to own their learning, take part in the process, and to communicate their learning effectively. In student surveys each year,  students identify her passion as the catalyst for their learning. To quote a student from last year, “Ms. Graham is so excited about what she is teaching that I want to learn more, even if I don’t like the subject.”  We constantly hear back from Ms. Graham’s AP English students that they were more than prepared for freshman level English in college and they were far ahead of their classmates."
