District News Update February 6, 2014

We continue to have many things to celebrate in our school district. Read this month's update for a few highlights! This update includes reports provided to the Board of Education, as well as items from the February 2014 Board of Education meeting.

Congratulations to Waverly High School Actors and our Director (click to view details)

Ten Waverly high school students have scored at least a 30 or higher on their ACT!

Congratulations to WHS students Emily Hoss, Abriana Campos, Nikki Larsen, and Zach Tabor for qualifying for FCCLA Star State!

Congratulations to the Waverly High School Singers for being selected to perform at the state capitol March 16!

Congratulations to WHS Volleyball Coach Neujahr and Senior Olivia Boender for selection to the Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star game to be held in July 2014. WHS Senior Nicki Larsen was selected to play in the NCA All-Star game for softball!

Congratulations Waverly FFA at the District Leadership Skills Events in Beatrice. District Champions and District Runner-Ups will move on to State in April.

Kindergarten Round-Up

Eagle Elementary will host kindergarten round-up on Friday, March 21. Hamlow Elementary will have round-up for 2014-15 on Friday, March 28th. Each school will have two sessions, morning and afternoon. If you have a student that will be 5 years old before July 31 they are eligible for kindergarten. Please contact the school with any questions.

The Board of Education met on February 3.

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mr. Craig Patzel, Waverly Intermediate School Principal, presented information regarding curriculum and instruction actions that are occurring to improve student academic achievement. He also specific examples of how teachers are using data to identify if concepts are understood by students. The feedback helps teachers identify if learning objectives are mastered consistently in every classroom in a grade level.

The superintendent reported on legislation and goals for 2014.  Goals include student academic acheivement, district communication process, and addressing facility needs.

Committee reports were given and members who attended training sessions shared information. 

The Board action included:

1. First reading of Policy 1110 - Advertising and Promotion.

2. Approve an agreement with DLR Group to provide architectural and engineering services related to the replacement of skylights at Hamlow Elementary and Waverly High School.

The Board discussed the contract renewal for a School Resource Officer. Captain Houchin from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office provided information and recommended that we consider increasing the SRO contract from half-time to at least sixty percent. An officer is shared between Waverly and Raymond Central.

The Board discussed the 2014-15 school calendar, which is scheduled for approval at the March 3 meeting.

Before adjourning the meeting, the board discussed upcoming activities and committee meetings. The next regular meeting will be March 3 at the district office in Waverly.

A joint meeting with the Waverly City Council was scheduled to take place on February 4, but was postponed until a later date due to inclement weather.
