District News Update May 6, 2014

District 145 News Update May 2014 edition contains a few highlights of school activities, and learning that is happening. Included in this update are a few reminders as well items from the May 2014 Board of Education meeting. Don't forget to sign up for the Foundation for Education Golf Tournament and Swim Event to be held on May 29!

Commitment to Excellence!

Congratulations to the Jared Story, WHS student who was one of ten students honored at the 25th Annual Outstanding Economics Student Awards.

Congratulations to the WHS sophomore Dylan Heger, who was chosen to present at the 2014 Lincoln Youth Ted Talk. 

Congratulations to the WHS Journalism Department for earning second place in Class B at the state competition!

Congratulations to Dylan Janecek, WHS student recognized as Runza's Player of the Month! Channel 8 KLKN news segment and video is available online.

Congratulations to all WHS students for hundreds of accomplishments that were recognized at the annual Honor's Convocation!

Congratulations Waverly High School band and choir students for earning top ratings at District Music contest.

Thank you to the Waverly High School Clubs that visited elementary and middle schools recently to promote involvement in the respective organizations. Lots of excitement generated about participation.

Thank you to the Parent/Teacher organizations that held annual "Fun Runs" at Eagle and Waverly, and thanks to all of the participants!

Waverly High School Class of 2014 Commencement ceremony is Sunday, May 18 at 2:00p.m.

Last Day of School

Tuesday, May 20 will be the last day of school for students. Students will be dismissed prior to noon on the last day. Each school building will provide details to parents regarding specific dismissal times. Despite missing two "snow days" this year, it has been determined that sufficient educational hours were built into the calendar, which results in no make-up days for students. 

May 2014 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met at the central office on May 5.

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mr. Lucas Bingham, District Technology Director, presented information regarding integration of technology into the classroom, use of technology for communication, and provided an update on future infrastructure upgrades.

The superintendent reported on legislation, and board policies that may be effected, as well as providing end of the school year information.

Committee reports were given and board members who attended training sessions shared information.

The Board action included approval for:

1. Conditional list of WHS graduates.

2. Waverly High School Jazz Band and Swing Choir Trip to Chicago in 2015.

3. Second reading of board policies.

4. Skylight projects for this summer: Replacment at Hamlow Elementary and removal at Waverly High School. Low bid awarded to New Generation Construction.

5. Hiring of new teachers and staff for the 2014-15 school year.

6. Hiring of Mr. Cody Hoegh as the assistant middle school principal for 2014-15.

Before adjourning the meeting, the board discussed facility projects, district survey of employees, WHS commencement ceremony, as well as upcoming activities and committee meetings. The next regular meeting will be June 2 at the district office in Waverly.
