Math Curriculum Resource Materials Approved

Inserted Image  District 145 - Waverly elementary school students will use new math curriculum materials this year. Approval by the Board of Education occurred at the July 7, 2014 meeting to purchase Math Expressions from the publishing company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as the resource for students in grades K-5. The cost of the purchase approved is not to exceed $150,000.

An in-depth process included teacher representatives from grades K-12 identifying the expectations for students at every grade level. All elementary teachers had an opportunity to examine the options to determine which resources best matches our academic needs, as well as aligning to state standards.

Math Expressions is a rigorous math program that matched our district criteria, which includes a balanced approach to teaching math and problem solving. A technology component is also included that will supplement classroom materials. Training and ongoing support for elementary teachers is part of the implementation plan that was presented to the Board of Education by Mr. Scott Blum, District 145's Director of Learning. The purchase was conducted in conjunction with the selection process for math resources in grades 6-12. Secondary teachers will spend the 2014-15 school year piloting several new resources that were identified as possibilities during the last school year.

Changes to several high school math courses will be implemented in 2014-15. It was determined more consistent student opportunities to learn specific concepts were needed prior to the state of Nebraska's accountability test (NeSA-M), which occurs in grade 11. This is another step as part of the District 145 strategic plan that identified a need to better align math curriculum and resources to improve academic achievement for students.
