State Champions and National Qualifiers for FCCLA

April 17, 2015

Fifteen members from Waverly High School’s FCCLA Chapter attended the State Leadership Conference & Competition April 12-14, 2015, at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, NE.  The conference theme was “Towards New Horizons,” remembering & celebrating FCCLA’s past 70 years (including FHA & HERO) and moving towards FCCLA’s future horizons.

During SLC (state leadership conference) twelve Waverly members competed in the state level FCCLA STAR Competition.  Statewide, FCCLA has 3,200 members and 104 chapters from the 12 districts within Nebraska.  500 members from across the state qualified from their district in January to compete at the state-level STAR Competition.  The STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) event competitions allow members to select one event category (each category is related to Family & Consumer Sciences education (skills and knowledge-based), family/community outreach, leadership, or community/global issues).   Students then had extensive criteria to follow in which they apply Family & Consumer Sciences-related knowledge and skills, develop an in-depth service-based project utilizing those skills, carry-out the project, and then create a professional presentation to share out the results, experience, and skills gained.  Three of Waverly’s students were state champions, qualifying for nationals this July in Washington D.C!
