Parent Survey Results

2015

During the months of February/March 2015 we conducted a parent survey. The results indicate very strong support for the education provided in District 145. This is another piece of evidence that will be used to identify progress and success, as well as areas for continued improvement. We appreciate the parents that took the time to complete the survey and share your comments.

Parents were sent emails with a link to the survey prior to parent-teacher conferences. A follow-up email was sent one week later. Parents received a reminder from their child’s teachers during P-T conferences to complete the survey. Computers were made available at the school for parents to complete the survey. A few parents completed a paper copy of the survey. Parents were allowed (and encouraged) to complete one survey for each child that attends school. Parents may have filled out two (or more) separate surveys for the same school, or the same parent may have filled out separate surveys if children from the same family attend at different buildings. Parents were allowed to skip questions and were able to submit written comments. The number of surveys completed was: Eagle – 117; Hamlow – 151; WIS – 153; WMS – 235; WHS – 227.

The vast majority of parents reported that their child has access to an electronic device and to the internet outside of school. Questions were asked about the amount of information parents receive from school and the source of the information. A large majority of respondents reported they are receiving the “right amount of information.” When comparing the results to the 2013 parent survey, there is significant improvement. This was expected because communication has been an area of emphasis at both the district and school building level.

Parents agree that using electronic communication was the preferred method to receive information from the school or teacher. They agree that our district messaging system has improved communication, and less than 1% of respondents felt the system was used too often. The results show that using multiple methods of communication helps information reach parents.

Parents agree that our schools are welcoming, and both parents and students are treated with respect. Parents agree their children are proud of their school, enjoy attending school, their child feels safe at school and agree the staff has high expectations. More than 80% of parents agree their child is receiving a quality education, while five percent of middle school parents and eleven percent of high school parents disagree that their child is receiving a quality education. Nearly all elementary parents, and over 80% at WMS/HS, agree they could talk with a teacher when an issue occurred. At the MS/HS, there were a number of parents whom “neither agree nor disagree” with this question, which may indicate they may not have encountered an issue or they did not have a reason to talk with teachers or administrators.

Parents were asked to give an overall “grade” to the school. More than 91% gave the elementary an A or B, while approximately 80% of MS/HS parents did. This is a definite improvement from the 2013 parent survey. The number of parents that completed the 2015 survey was greater than the number of respondents in 2013.

Overall, the results are very positive. The survey results validate that parents are satisified with their child's school. The administrative team will continue to work with staff to use this data to make adjustments as part of our school improvement plans. We are fortunate to have great people in our schools, and parents are very involved in District 145. This parternship is one of the many reasons why District 145 is able to provide an excellent education for students.
