Great Start to the School Year!

2015-16

Welcome to another school year! District 145 is off to a great start!

Students and staff have been engaged in various activities in the first days of school to develop stronger relationships with each other, and to help ease the transition into the new school year. A group of Waverly high school seniors spent time planning and preparing to welcome freshman, which included home visits prior to the first day. After talking with some 9th graders and parents over the past two weeks, they agree that Waverly High School has created a positive first impression! All of our schools have provided parents a chance to meet school staff, and students are getting to know their peers and school staff as they embark on the next phase of their educational journey.

With the help of many volunteers, a TeamMates program is being established this year, starting at Waverly Middle School. Demoine Adams, a TeamMates representative, recently spoke to students at Waverly Middle School. Click here for details!

The District 145 Foundation for Education helped jump start the school year by providing breakfast to all district staff on August 10, and sponsoring the Youth Frontiers Retreat for WHS 9th graders last week. Youth Frontier retreats for all 5th and 7th graders will be held this fall. The FFE Viking Discovery program provides before/after school care for elementary age students.

In District 145, we focus on academics, and much more. We are providing students opportunities to discover their strengths, develop their talents, and learn how to use their unique abilities to positively influence their environment. Our focus is upon the District Essential Outcomes for students (click here to view), or our version of the 21st Century skills all students need to be successful. We will ensure our curriculum is taught in a manner that allows students to grow and learn in preparation for their future, as we strive to help all students become college and career ready! It is a complex endeavor, and one that requires a partnership between students, their families, district staff, and patrons. A grant received from the Nebraska Department of Education (ReVISION) provides an opportunity to review, and expand our career and technical education programs. One result has been the addition of Health Science career pathway classes at Waverly High School this year, and the implementation of a revised career education program at Waverly Middle School.

Enrollment continues to increase, and with the addition of an early childhood program at Eagle Elementary this year, we may surpass the 2,000 student mark!

Elementary students are already working on building up their reading stamina. One strategy in classrooms is the use of the Daily Five. (click to learn more).

In order to help communication between home and school, there are many ways to connect. On our website, at the top of the home page, is a link "Connect with Us." This will take you to information about how to receive "Alert" messages, as well as provide a link to our school Facebook pages. You do not need to have a FB account in order to view photos and information. There is an abundance of information on our website. If you are looking for training to figure it all out, please attend a "Technology Night."

I am pleased to report that District 145 continues to outperform state and national averages on the ACT. Click here for 2015 results! The Nebraska Department of Education requires tests (NeSA) to be taken annually by students in grades 3-8, 11. Results from the 2014-15 school year are available, and additional information will be provided by NDE as part of the State Report Card. For more information click here to view a separate article.

Construction improvements at Eagle Elementary are nearly finished in the interior, and it is looking fantastic! As we finish up, we are paying particular attention to details to ensure that all items have been completed satisfactorily. At Waverly High School, the installation of fiber cement board on the exterior of the building has begun. The majority of the roof has been replaced, and the fiber cement board installation is the next step. The contractor will be repairing damage to the sidewalk and asphalt at WHS. The installation of the fiber optic network between schools is complete, and testing is being done to verify all components are working. The next phases of the projects as part of the bond issue are being discussed. Thus far we are within our budget for the first phase of projects. We purposely specified that the installation of the fiber cement board at Eagle Elementary and Waverly High School could be completed in this fall because it gives contractors more time, thus reducing the financial cost to the district. These exterior projects can be accomplished with limited disruption to student learning.

We have many new certified staff members that have joined our team!
