District News Update 1-08-16

School is back in session for 2016! We are excited to continue the tradition of excellence this year!

January 2016 Board of Education Meeting

The Board of Education met on January 4. As part of the annual reorganization meeting, the board elected officers for 2016. Andy Grosshans as President, Bruce Sedivy as Vice President, Jessie Zuniga as Treasurer and Cheryl Landon as Secretary.

During each monthly meeting a presentation is given. Mr. Ross Ricenbaw, Waverly Middle School Principal, and Mr. George Schere, Assistant Principal at WMS, presented information regarding the transition process into middle school and from MS to high school. They have collected data from students, staff, and parents to identify ways to improve student transitions. They also shared how individual student data is being used to analyze WMS math test scores, and a process to make changes to increase academic achievement.

Waverly High School teachers Mrs. Gregory and Mrs. Scott gave a report on the Teammates Program that has been implemented at WMS with 6th grade students this year. There are 24 students with a Teammates Mentor. There has been excellent community support to get the program started this year. Teammates board member Sarah Harms provided additional information and mentioned that more adult mentors will be needed in the future as the program expands.

The superintendent report included information regarding Career Academies and college dual-credit opportunities through Southeast Community College. It was reported that for the first time in more than seven years, the school district did not access a line of credit for operating expenses during the first semester of the school year. It has been a goal to gradually improve the district's cash flow to reduce the amount of interest paid during the fiscal year.

Committee reports were given. The Building/Grounds/Transportation committee reported that an interlocal agreement with the City of Waverly is being drafted for use of Lawson Park for the high school baseball team; facility project designs continue for the next phase of construction and will be presented to the full board at the February meeting.

The Board took action to:

1. Reaffirm policy 8260 - board member code of ethics and protocols.

2. Approve the District 145 Annual Report

3. Approve board of education goals that include identification and implementation of the best practices in governance, continuation of facility planning to complete projects as part of the 2014 bond issue, and continuation of improving communication.

4.  Approve the 2016-17 salary for the superintendent.

The Board discussed:

1. School Resource Officer contract with the Lancaster County Sheriff Department. It was recommended to increase the service from a part-time deputy to full-time during the next school year. The board heard information from Lancaster County Sheriff Captain Houchin, and received a written report regarding the school resource officer from Mr. Daniell, WHS Assistant Principal. The board is scheduled to vote at its February meeting.

2. Nebraska School Activities Association Transgender Policy. A policy is being considered at the state level regarding the participation of transgender high school students in NSAA activities. This decision will be made at the state level. The NSAA policy that is being considered by the state association was discussed. This topic is being considered at NSAA District Meetings and by the NSAA Board at their January 14 meeting.
