District News Update 5-05-16

The month of May is packed with school activities, events and recognition. We are finishing another fantastic school year and making the most of every day of learning available. The last day of school for students is May 17.

On May 4 Waverly High School held its annual Honors Convocation to recognize the numerous accomplishments of students. As Star Wars fans (and Mr. Blake TobyWanKenobi) stated "May the fourth be with you!" During national teacher week, it was fitting to recognize so many student achievements, as we have excellent teachers, coaches and activity sponsors that provide support and guidance to challenge our students to develop and utilize their talents.

Thank you to all who support our school district, and volunteer your time and efforts to enhance student opportunities and experiences.

One of our many valuable community partners is Horizon Bank. Each year they provide funding for our School Messenger system that allows us to send alert messages to students, staff, parents and patrons. During the past school year this program has continued to provide an efficient means to communicate. From August 2015 through April 2016, we successfully delivered 17,504 phone calls, 444,889 emails, and 195,247 text messages. By comparison, during our first year of implementation (2012-13) with School Messenger, we sent fewer than 110,000 emails, 52,500 text messages and 49,245 phone calls.

Our social media presence continues to grow, with 3,276 "likes" on our Facebook pages, which gives us an average reach for every post to reach thousands of viewers! Another program that continues to grow is electronic payments to our hot lunch program. The "E-Funds" service is provided at no extra cost to our district thanks to our membership in the Nebraska School Boards Association. End users pay a fee for transactions. The total number of transactions this year has grown to more than 2,700 deposits, which totals approximately $172,500 - or about 30% of total lunch revenues collected. This is nearly $50,000 more in electronic payments than last year.

Our district has been awarded Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Grants for the Eagle Elementary Early Childhood Playground surface - $2583 and $12,513 for Hamlow Elementary playground project from the Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program. Thanks to Mrs.  Heusman, Eagle Elementary principal, for writing and submitting the grants. For the 2016-17 school year, grades 6-12 will be using new science curriculum resource materials from McGraw-Hill. A team of teachers and administrators have completed a process to identify materials that will best serve our students.

The Waverly Education Association hosted their annual recognition event on May 4th to honor teachers retiring or those with 25 years of service. Teachers retiring at the conclusion of this school year are Jacque Kidder, Teri Lindquist, Gaye McCallum, Jean McGill, and Nancy Pietzyk. They have 149 years of combined service to the district, which equates to thousands of students impacted! Twenty-five year service awards were presented to Susie Lehr and Lori Koutecky. Thank you for the tremendous dedication to our school district!

On May 15 we celebrate the Class of 2016 during the Waverly High School Commencement ceremony. Another great group of individuals will move on to the next stage of their lives.

The student success acheived this year would not be possible without the cooperative efforts of students, staff, parents and community.
