Food Allergies

Due to student food allergies, we will be following new guidelines in regards to treats brought into the school for birthdays or other occasions.  Also, for safety and equity issues all snacks provided for our three yearly parties; Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day, the school district will be providing a drink and snack for each child.  No additional food items will be accepted for these parties.  We will use the following birthday treat list for the 2017-18 school year.  We will follow the same guidelines for all classrooms.  All food will need to be checked in the office before being taken to the classroom.   Please understand that we will not be able to serve any items that are not on the approved list.    There are too many products that seem similar and yet are not safe due to different ingredients and methods of production

Dental Screenings

State regulations require us to do dental screenings on all students, unless we have documentation stating that they have had a dental exam within 6 months of the beginning of the school year.  If your child has had a dental exam since February 17, 2017, please send us a note signed by your dentist stating the date of their dental exam.  If you would like to have your dentist fax the note to us, please have them fax it to 402-313-3280, attn: Hamlow.

Snacks

Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students have the option of participating in the snack program again this year.  Some of the options will include fresh fruit, cheese sticks whole grain crackers, cereal bars, graham crackers and several options. The cost for snack is $14.00 per quarter or $56.00 for the year.  If your child is interested in having snack, please send check or cash to the office.  This needs to be earmarked for snack.

School is a safe place for all students.  We have students in the building with life-threatening food allergies, and we want to alleviate any confusion regarding school snack.  We also believe equity is an important issue for our students. Please note students will no longer be able to bring their snacks from home.

We are encouraging students to bring a water bottle to school to be used throughout the school year.  We will fill the water bottles each morning.  The bottles will come home on Fridays to be cleaned. Some students prefer to fill their bottles at home each day so their water will be cold throughout the day and that is ok also. If your student does not have a water bottle, small cups will be made available.

If you have questions about this program or need assistance, please call the office.

Handbooks

The 2017-2018 Elementary Student Handbook will be posted on our website prior to school starting. Paper copies of the handbook will not be distributed, but are available in the office upon request. It is important for all parents and students to review the handbook together.  All families will need to complete and return the Student Handbook Form indicating you have read the handbook.   This form along with a media release form and Internet usage form will be on your child’s desk on Open House Night.

Handbook (will be updated prior to the start of school)

Communication has always been a priority for our school.  We post information on the district website http://www.district145.org/ and Hamlow Elementary Facebook Page often.  We want you to be involved in your child’s education.  We also encourage parents to visit school.  Remember that all visitors have to sign in at the office to receive a visitor’s badge prior to going to your child’s classroom.  Signing out is also required.

Student Information (Immunizations Physical, Vision Exam & Birth Certificate) – This is a reminder that students will not be allowed to attend school until their original birth certificate physical, vision exam and immunizations are on file in the building.  All kindergarten students and students enrolling from a school outside of Nebraska are required to have all of the above.

Prescription Medication – Prescription medications will continue to be distributed to students who are in need of this service.  Parents need to personally bring prescription medications that students need at school and sign a permission slips before medications will be given.  This is a policy that better ensures the safety of the students attending Hamlow Elementary.

Anti-Bullying Policy – One of the missions of the district is to provide a physically safe and emotionally secure environment for all students and staff.  The administration and staff are to implement strategies and practices to reinforce and encourage positive behaviors by students.  Positive behaviors include non-violence, cooperation, teamwork, understanding, and acceptance of others.  The administration and staff are to implement strategies and practices to identify and prevent inappropriate behaviors by all students, including anti-bullying education for all students.  Inappropriate behaviors include bullying, intimidation, and harassment.  Bullying means any ongoing pattern of physical, verbal or electronic abuse on school grounds, in a vehicle owned, leased, or contracted by the school being used for a school purpose by a school employee or designee, or at school sponsored activities or school sponsored athletic events.  The school district shall review the anti-bullying policy annually.

Absences – Call the school if our child is absent.  If a call is not received, it is our policy to call you.  For the child’s safety, we need to account for the child’s whereabouts.

Parent Contact – Please inform us immediately if you have had a change of address or phone number since last spring or if you move during the school year.

Visitor Badges – Please remember that any time you are visiting school you must check in at the office and receive a visitor badge.

School District 145 Bus Transportation – Students who ride the bus to school are expected to ride the bus home unless we have a signed note by the parent.  Country students are expected to board the bus at Hamlow and not walk to any of the other schools.

Cross-town Transportation – If you live in Waverly and north of Highway 6, and would like your child transported to and from school, you may sign up at the Central office at 14511 Heywood, Waverly, NE.  The cost is $85.00 for 1 child and $110 for 2 or more children.

Lunch Accounts – School District 145 continues to utilize an electronic lunch management program.  Your child’s lunch ID and instructions on how to access your lunch account will be sent by mail from the Superintendent’s office.   Please use this number when making future payments to your families lunch account. To avoid long lines during Meet Your Teacher Night, please feel free to bring or mail the enclosed School District 145 Lunch Account form.

Lunch Payment Form

Hamlow Elementary School offers a breakfast program during the school year.  Breakfast is served from 8:00-8:20.  Students arriving on a late bus will be provided time to have breakfast at school.  The student needs to indicate this preference in the school office when checking in.

Parking Information to be used at Hamlow Elementary - Thank you in advance for using caution when dropping off and picking up your child(ren) at school.  The most important safety aspect is your watchful eye on the children while driving.  Please share this information with anyone that is responsible for getting the students to or from school (babysitter, grandparents, etc).  It is important that everyone follows this process

Use the following guidelines to improve the safety of the students at Hamlow Elementary.

Please drop your child(ren) off in the designated lane on the north side of the building (front).  DO NOT drop your child(ren) off by the crosswalk on Castlewood Street or on the northwest corner of 143rd & Castlewood Street.  This is NOT a safe drop off point.

When dropping off your child(ren), remember to be next to the curb.  DO NOT drop off your child(ren) 5-6 feet from the curb and have them walk through the other cars that are dropping off their children next to the curb.  This is not a safe situation.

Please remember to park in a designated parking space when leaving your vehicle to enter the building.  Do no part your vehicle in the drop off lane when you are entering the building.  When people choose to park in the drop off lane, the entire drop off lane becomes congested as people try to move around the parked vehicle.

When you park in one of the designated spaces, please walk your child(ren) across the drop off lane before school and meet them at the school and walk them back across the lane after school.  It is not safe to have students navigate through the traffic on their own.
