Donations Provide Chromebooks for Students

Foundation for Education, Parent-Teacher Organizations

Ever wonder what happens to money that is donated through fundraisers to Parent-Teacher Organizations or to the Foundation for Education? Through tremendous cooperation, almost $33,000 was donated to the school district to purchase 151 Chromebooks to provide additional access to information and help support the infusion of technology into the curriculum. The district is in the process of transitioning to a more digital, and mobile learning environment. Students at Waverly High School regularly utilize technology in their courses, and on any given day the computer labs are in constant use, as well as available laptops, I-Pads and Chromebooks. Middle School and elementary students also use technology as part of the learning process. As the district has upgraded its technology infrastructure, thanks to the bond issue projects, we are ready to start expanding the access to technology in classrooms.

Technology provides access to information instantly, and allows collaboration amongst students and teachers to occur more readily. Mobile technology allows greater possibilities for teachers to utilize more engaging instructional strategies, and provides more opportunities for students to be challenged, or receive additional support, through the digital curriculum materials available.

From the recent donations, sixty new chromebooks are being added at the high school, thirty chromebooks at the middle school, thirty chromebooks at Waverly Intermediate School, 12 chromebooks at Hamlow Elementary and 19 chromebooks at Eagle Elementary. The Foundation for Education donated $15,000. The Hamlow/WIS PTO donated nearly $11,000, and generous contributions from the Eagle PTE ($3915) and Waverly Middle School PTO were received. The school district contributed several thousand dollars towards the purchase as well to ensure proper charging stations and storage carts could be used to house and secure the devices. In addition to these donations, the school district purchased 48 chromebooks in August 2015 for Waverly High School and Middle School (24 each).

The Foundation for Education (FFE) has been supporting innovation and educational needs in the school district for more than two decades. Several years ago, the FFE began providing child care for elementary students before and after school. The Viking Discovery Program serves dozens of families in our district throughout the school year and during the summer. This program fills a need in our communities, and it also is a substantial fundraising opportunity. Tens of thousands of dollars annually from program profits is given back to the school district in the form of teacher and student grants, sponsoring character and leadership development through the Youth Frontiers Retreats, and an all-staff breakfast to kick off the school year. An annual golf tournament is held by the FFE as well to support District 145 needs.

The Eagle Elementary PTE and the Hamlow/WIS PTO hold a variety of fundraisers each year to earn funds to support their schools in a variety of ways. The primary purpose for these groups is to supplement the school budget to provide extras that otherwise could not occur. They support field trips, classroom supplies, playground equipment, sponsor fun student events and often purchase technology for teachers and students to use. The Waverly Middle School PTO raises funds through annual magazine sales and a concession stand at WMS sporting events and school dances. The dollars that you provide to these organizations help students.

District 145 is very fortunate to have tremendous community support. We appreciate all of the people who are willing to volunteer their time to make a difference for our students.
