District News Update August 3, 2015

by Bill Heimann, Superintendent

The first day of school is just around the corner! Elementary students start on August 13, while students in grades 6-12 start school one day sooner on August 12!

District 145 has been busy making preparations for the start of the 2015-16 school year! Besides the usual preparations, we have been managing several construction projects as part of the school bond issue that was approved last fall. Eagle Elementary classrooms, commons area, media center, and administrative offices are nearly complete. The final touches may not be completed prior to the first day of school, but we will make adjustments as necessary. Classes at Eagle will start as scheduled, although it may be necessary to shift around a few classrooms until the construction is completed and we receive the final approval to occupy the new space. As you can see from the photos posted with the article, the improvements are worth the wait!

The replacement of exterior surfaces at both Eagle Elementary and Waverly High School will continue into the fall, but should have minimal effect on the daily routine for students and staff. The fiber optic network cabling has been buried underground in Waverly and is nearing completion as connections are being wired into our schools.

We welcome 17 new certified staff this year, and expect to educate nearly 2000 students this year! Thanks to the District 145 Foundation for Education for sponsoring our nearly 300 employees to attend breakfast on August 10 as we "officially" kick off the year!

At the August 3 Board of Education meeting, board members will consider first and second reading to board policies, as well review progress toward district goals. Implementing an early childhood program, improving math achievement and aligning Career and Technical Education curriculum was a specific district focus for 2015. Members will receive an update on the progress of our construction projects. Non-bond issue projects for the summer that have been completed include: repainting Waverly high school boys and girls locker rooms; regrading the WHS softball field; refinishing the gym floors at WHS, MS, and WIS; restriping the parking lots; replacing a cooling compressor on an Energy Recovery Unit at WHS; replacing drywall and windows at the Alternative Education (LIFE) building; and installing a replacement for the fuel monitoring system at the district transportation facility. Total cost to complete these items was over $45,000. We continue to invest in the maintenance of our facilities to provide a quality learning environment for all students.

We are excited for the new school year to begin!
